The Labour conference in Liverpool shows that some of retail’s demands are breaking through to government, writes Helen Dickinson. But it also reveals that Labour’s priorities lie in fighting off the rise of Reform, not focusing on business

Attending the Labour Party Conference this week, I was struck by how much of the messaging was aimed at energising the base… and countering Reform. It was political first, economic second. The tone was one of realism – an acknowledgement that governing is hard, that change takes time and that there will be no quick wins.
